Arugam Bay is widely regarded as the surfing capital of Sri Lanka and ranks among the top ten surf destinations in the world. Located on the dry southeast coast, its unique geographical position ensures long, clean, and consistent right-hand point breaks that are a dream for surfers. The prime season runs from April to October, attracting a global community of wave riders who transform this quiet fishing village into a vibrant, multicultural hub. Beyond the waves, 'A-Bay' offers a laid-back, bohemian atmosphere that sets it apart from the rest of the island. The evenings are defined by beach bonfires, live music, and rustic cafes. Additionally, its proximity to Kumana and Lahugala National Parks means you are never far from the wild; it is one of the few places on earth where you can surf in the morning and spot a wild leopard or elephant on a safari in the afternoon.

Any of our experiences can be included in your travel itinerary when planning your trip with our travel specialists as we help you plan the best way to include Sri Lankas destinations and experiences into your trip.

Surfing (Main Point)

Main Point is the crown jewel of Arugam Bay, sitting at the southern end of the beach. It is a classic reef break that generates long, walling right-handers that can peel for 400 to 600 meters on a good day. The wave is fast and hollow, making it the chosen venue for international competitions like the Red Bull Ride My Wave and various Qualifying Series events. While Main Point is the domain of intermediate and advanced surfers, the bay is inclusive. Just a short tuk-tuk ride away are spots like 'Baby Point' and 'Elephant Rock', which offer softer, sand-bottom breaks ideal for beginners and longboarders. This variety makes Arugam Bay a complete surfing ecosystem where novices can learn while pros chase barrels.
