Nestled amidst misty hills and centered around a scenic lake, Kandy is the cultural sanctuary of Sri Lanka and the last capital of the ancient kings. It is home to the sacred Temple of the Tooth Relic, one of the holiest sites in the Buddhist world. The city comes alive during the Esala Perahera festival, but year-round it offers lush botanical gardens, vibrant cultural dances, and a cooler climate that provides a refreshing escape from the tropical heat.

Any of our experiences can be included in your travel itinerary when planning your trip with our travel specialists as we help you plan the best way to include Sri Lankas destinations and experiences into your trip.

Temple of the Tooth

Originally built by King Vimaladharmasuriya I in the late 16th century (circa 1595), the current two-story structure was largely renovated and expanded by later kings, including Sri Vikrama Rajasinha who added the famous Octagon (Paththirippuwa) in the early 1800s. Its speciality is housing the left Canine Tooth of Lord Buddha, the country's most sacred palladium. It is now a UNESCO World Heritage site and a thriving pilgrimage destination. Devotees and tourists visit daily to witness the 'Thevava' (ritual drumming and offering) and to admire the golden roof and intricate Kandyan wood carvings. It is also the focal point of the annual Esala Perahera pageant.
