Arugam Bay

Arugam Bay is a world-renowned surfing destination that sits on the dry southeast coast of the island. Unlike the resort-heavy west coast, 'A-Bay' maintains a distinct laid-back, bohemian vibe with rustic cabanas, hammock cafes, and a reggae-filled nightlife. The surfing season runs from April to October, attracting a global community of wave riders. However, Arugam Bay is more than just surf. It is surrounded by wild lagoons and national parks like Kumana, meaning you are technically on a safari even while at the beach. It is common to see wild elephants crossing the road near the town or peacocks dancing in the fields, offering a unique 'jungle-beach' experience found nowhere else.

Main Point
Main Point is the primary reason surfers flock here. It is a classic right-hand reef break that offers long, consistent waves that can peel for up to 500 meters. Ideally suited for intermediate to advanced surfers, it hosts annual international competitions that put Sri Lanka on the global surfing map. Even if you don't surf, the energy here is infectious. You can sit at a beachside cafe sipping a thambili (king coconut) and watch the pros carve up the waves. For beginners, nearby spots like 'Baby Point' offer gentler waves, making Arugam Bay a place where you can learn the sport in warm, tropical waters.
