Sri Maha Bodhi

Planted in 288 BC by King Devanampiya Tissa, this sacred fig tree was grown from a sapling brought from India by Sanghamitta Theri (daughter of Emperor Ashoka). It holds the record as the oldest living human-planted tree in the world with a known planting date. It symbolizes the establishment of Buddhism in Sri Lanka. For over 2,300 years, it has been cared for by hereditary guardians. Today, it is the most sacred site in the city, surrounded by a golden fence and visited by thousands of white-clad devotees who come to offer prayers and leave flags on the surrounding rails.
