Gangaramaya Temple
Established in the late 19th century (circa 1885) by the scholarly monk Hikkaduwe Sri Sumangala Nayaka Thera, this temple was later expanded into an internationally renowned institute by Galboda Gnanissara Thera. It is structurally unique for blending Sri Lankan, Thai, Indian, and Chinese architectural styles into one eclectic complex. Today, it serves not only as an active place of Buddhist worship but also as a center of learning and a museum. Visitors can walk through the Seema Malaka on Beira Lake, view a massive collection of artifacts ranging from ivory carvings to vintage cars, and experience a serene spiritual atmosphere right in the heart of the chaotic city.
