Galle is a captivating blend of European colonial history and tropical island life. Its crown jewel is the Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage site built by the Portuguese and fortified by the Dutch. Inside the ramparts, you'll find a living city with narrow cobblestone streets lined with stylish cafes, boutique hotels, and restored colonial villas. It offers a unique atmosphere that feels worlds away from the rest of the island.

Galle Fort
Originally built by the Portuguese in 1588, it was extensively fortified by the Dutch East India Company from 1649 onwards. It is unique as the largest remaining fortress in Asia built by European occupiers. The fort survived the 2004 tsunami largely intact due to these massive 17th-century granite ramparts. Today, it is a living UNESCO World Heritage site where history meets modern lifestyle. The old Dutch buildings have been converted into trendy boutiques, art galleries, and museums. Visitors can walk the entire 3km circuit of the ramparts, watching locals play cricket and divers jump from Flag Rock.
