Sinharaja Forest Reserve is Sri Lanka's last viable area of primary tropical rainforest and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The name translates to 'Kingdom of the Lion'. It is a global biodiversity hotspot; more than 60% of the trees are endemic to Sri Lanka, and many of them are considered rare. The forest acts as a critical catchment area for two major rivers, the Gin Ganga and the Kalu Ganga. Unlike the dry zone safari parks, Sinharaja is a wet, humid, and evergreen world that must be explored on foot. It is a destination for the true nature lover who appreciates the small details—the vibrant colors of a tree frog, the massive size of a giant squirrel, or the unique phenomenon of 'mixed-species bird flocks' moving through the canopy. The forest is alive with the constant hum of cicadas and the rush of waterfalls.

Sinharaja Forest Reserve

This reserve is the premier destination for birdwatchers in Sri Lanka. It shelters 20 of the island's 26 endemic bird species, including the elusive Red-faced Malkoha and the spectacular Sri Lanka Blue Magpie. The vegetation is characterized by tall dipterocarp trees that form a dense canopy, filtering the sunlight and keeping the forest floor in eternal twilight. Trekking here is an immersive sensory experience. Guided walks take you deep into the jungle where the air is thick with oxygen and moisture. You will encounter pitcher plants, colorful orchids, and reptiles like the Green Pit Viper. It requires patience and silence, but the reward is seeing an ancient ecosystem that has remained virtually unchanged for millions of years.
