Udawalawe is situated on the boundary of Sri Lanka's wet and dry zones, centered around the massive Udawalawe Reservoir. The park was created to provide a sanctuary for wild animals displaced by the construction of the reservoir in the 1970s. Its landscape is distinct from other parks, characterized by open plains and tall grasslands that resemble the African savanna, making it one of the easiest places in Asia to spot wildlife without dense jungle obstruction. It is widely regarded as the best place in Sri Lanka to see Asian Elephants in the wild year-round. Unlike other parks where elephants migrate, the residents of Udawalawe are permanent fixtures. A jeep safari here almost guarantees sightings of entire families, including tiny calves, grazing peacefully by the roadside or bathing in the reservoir's waters against the backdrop of misty mountains.

Udawalawe National Park

Spanning 30,821 hectares, this park supports a population of approximately 500 to 600 wild elephants. The park's ecosystem includes marshes, forests, and grasslands, but the 'skeletons' of dead trees standing in the reservoir are its most iconic visual feature. It is also a birdwatcher's paradise, home to raptors like the Changeable Hawk-eagle and the Serpent Eagle. The safari experience here is often less crowded and more relaxed than Yala. The open terrain allows you to watch elephants from a distance for long periods as they feed and interact. It is not uncommon to have a curious tusker walk right past your jeep, offering a heart-pounding close encounter that emphasizes the sheer scale of these magnificent creatures.
